Frequent Asked Questions

The questions we hear most, answered straight.

Before you come
Zero. Newbees is a crash-course, and you'll soon be ready to join our "Amarelinho" level.
If you've never danced forró before, join our Newbees class, starting at 20h. If you have danced forró before, try to arrive right at 20h (or even a few minutes early) so we can dance with you and find the best level to start your journey. From there, you can join the level we've assigned for you, plus any lower-level class you'd like.
No, we rotate partners in class. Most people come solo.
No. Just show up, and your first class is free. Creating an account beforehand is fine too, but not required.
Levels & progress
That's very personal. It usually depends more on how many classes you've attended and how often you've gone out dancing than on how much time has passed since your first class. Earlier levels usually move quicker: Newbees can take anywhere from 1 to 4 classes, Amarelinho usually takes less than a semester, Amarelão normally takes at least one semester, and so on. We promote students on the spot, at any point in the year, whenever we're confident you're ready.
We strongly recommend always accepting! The main goal of Monitoria isn't to "test" our students, but to give some one-on-one, tailored attention. Over time, this process also lets us see whether you have all the required concepts and steps in your repertoire, but that's the secondary objective.
Practical
Not at all! Each class is planned to bring value on its own. There are, of course, classes that challenge our students more, and that's why we have "levels" in our school: each "level" just tells us that you mastered some required concepts and steps.
Our regular classes happen in room 2 of Dance It, Tanzschule. Entrance is through Gladbachstrasse 1C, 8006 Zürich.
Comfortable clothes and shoes (or flip-flops) you like moving in. We strongly advise bringing a water bottle too!
Money
At most CHF 25 for a day of classes; half that if you're a student, unemployed, or a KulturLegi holder. See our pricing page for more info.
Culture & safety
Traditional forró had gender-based roles: men led, women followed. We don't follow that; dance whichever role makes you happy. In fact, we recommend most students learn both roles, since they're different experiences and both are fun!
Yes! We have a detailed Code of Conduct, which even includes its own FAQ covering topics like comfort, safety, etiquette, and more.
